How to separate vocals from a video in AI Nerdy

By AI Nerdy · Updated · 4 min read

AI Nerdy’s Vocal & Music Separator splits an uploaded audio or video file into a vocal track and a music track. Available on Starter and above, it lets you preview both tracks and download either one while leaving your original unchanged. Use it when you have a finished recording and need its voice or background music separately.

When should you separate vocals and music?

Suppose you have a narrated video with music underneath it. You want to reuse the narration with a different soundtrack, but you only have the finished export. Separating the audio gives you a vocal track you can listen to and assess before making that edit.

You can also use the music track when you want the background without the speech or singing. Separation does not grant permission to reuse a recording. Only upload and reuse material you own or have permission to use.

How do you separate vocals from a video?

Start with the original export if you have it. A recording that has already been repeatedly compressed may contain less detail for separation.

  1. Open Tools → Vocal & Music Separator and choose your video or audio file.
  2. Check the estimated Nerdium price on the separation button. The server verifies the audio duration before charging.
  3. Press Separate vocals & music. If the verified price changes, review and confirm the new price first.
  4. When the job finishes, play the Vocals and Music previews. Listen to a section where the voice and music overlap.
  5. Download the track and format you need before the results expire.

What does separation cost, and what can you download?

The separator costs 1 Nd per minute of uploaded audio, rounded up, with a minimum charge of 1 Nd. A 2 minute 10 second recording costs 3 Nd at this rate. A paid plan is required: Starter, Creator, Studio or Agency. Free accounts cannot run separation, even if they have Nerdium. Processing uses Nerdium separately from the finished-video estimates on the pricing cards.

Both tracks and all available downloads are included. Choose MP3 for a smaller audio file or WAV when you want an uncompressed output for further editing. A WAV export cannot restore detail already missing from the source. Video uploads also provide a video download with the selected track.

Can you separate a recording longer than 10 minutes?

Yes. The separator has a 200 MB upload cap and no 10-minute duration limit. A longer recording can fit below that cap when its bitrate is lower. Processing time and Nerdium cost still depend on the audio duration, so a small file is not necessarily a short or inexpensive job.

Supported files include MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and OGG. A video must contain an audio track. Keep the original file until you have checked and saved the outputs.

How long do results stay available?

Results are available for 24 hours after processing completes. Return while signed into the same account with a paid plan and open Previous files to access them without another separation charge. Reopening or downloading does not extend the deadline. If your account moves to Free, access stops even if the files have not yet expired; the deletion deadline still applies.

Separation quality depends on the recording. Speech, singing, music and sound effects can overlap, leaving traces or artifacts in either track. Preview the passages you plan to use; do not assume a successful job means a perfectly isolated voice. Failed processing jobs are refunded, and a pending refund is retried automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Does the separator change my original video?

No. The separator produces separate output tracks and leaves your original file unchanged.

Do I pay again to download the other track?

No. Both tracks and all available downloads are included in the separation price. Reopening an available result is also free.

What happens if I close the page?

Return while signed into the same account with a paid plan and check Previous files. Completed results expire 24 hours after completion. Moving to Free blocks access before that deadline.

Can Free users use the separator with purchased Nerdium?

No. Starter or a higher paid plan is required. A Nerdium balance alone does not unlock the separator.
